I personally find it fascinating to look at movies like Toy Story 4 which get a 98 on RT but only an 84 on Metacritic - even if they were both sourcing from exactly the same set of reviewers.

But if 84% of critics disliked a movie which you liked, this does not mean that RT is way off the mark.Īll of that out of the way, there's plenty of interesting discussion to be had about the differences between RT's binary "review good? y/n?" method vs Metacritic's "average all the actual ratings" method vs individual user ratings and on which site those users are posting. If their reviews contain literally falsifiable statements - "Inception really feels like amateur directing work, which makes sense as it's Christopher Nolan's first attempt at directing a movie" - then okay, that critic is way off the mark. Secondly, tons of critics not sharing your opinion on a piece of entertainment isn't "being way off the mark". All RT is doing is compiling reviews from these critics who write for outlets everywhere else. It's with Sandra Hall from the Sydney Morning Herald, Kimber Myers with the LA Times, Mark Dujsik at, etc. Let's say the underrated gem you loved was After, which right now has a 16% on RT.

They are gathering the reviews they find published everywhere else and aggregating them into an average. Rotten Tomatoes didn't go out and hire 100 people for their Critic division and issue them RT branding memos about "Marvel movies good! goChloro's favorite movies, bad!" Many times I find their "critics" to be way off the mark in their reviews. It may also be because long ago, I grew tired of being duped time and time again by RT ratings and many the entitled "critic". Obviously there are outliers for this as well, and I've given myself general IMDb ratings thresholds for my impressions on how good a movie would be before watching - 8+: all-time great 7.5-8: very good, possibly all-time great 6.5-7: good, possibly very good 6-6.5: okay, possibly good 5.5-6: meh, maybe good (I must have a specific reason for watching this movie) 5.5 and below: will not watch (again, unless I have a very good reason).Īm I the only one who feels this way? I may feel this way because other than the director, writers, or actors in a movie, ratings are the primary method for me to choose which movies I will watch and which I will not.

In addition, while I am a film enthusiast, I am also as a member of the general public, and I feel like my opinion on a given movie would agree with the average of the opinions of the rest of the people rating this movie. While obviously the general public may not be the best source of advice for how good a movie is, I feel like if a movie has 5-10,000+ ratings (which the vast majority of films on the site do, given ample time post-release date - most big movies have many more), it will generally be a decent representation of how good the movie will be. My go-to source for ratings is IMDb, which are rated by the general public. Sometimes movies are more than your entitled view on how film should be.

I understand all of these ratings are subjective, but I feel like a lot of these critics can be quite full of themselves and can take uppity points of view in their reviews just because they're film critics. I've seen some of my all-time favorite movies get 25% ratings, and I've seen some of my all-time worst movies get 90+% ratings. Am I the only person who puts NO stock into Rotten Tomatoes movie ratings? Many times I find their "critics" to be way off the mark in their reviews. I am the type of movie watcher who will ALWAYS look up the rating of a movie before I watch it (unless I'm tagging along to the movies with friends - in those scenarios, I'll watch almost anything). Gross uses of the word "underrated" and other hyperbolic terms ("the worst ever", etc) may resolve in a ban.įor leaked info about upcoming movies, twist endings, or anything else spoileresque, please use the following method ( leave the quotes in):
